Physics plays an increasing role for the understanding of many phenomena in living systems. This summer school was intended for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers with a background in physics and an interest in biological systems. In-depth lecture series covered recent examples of physical approaches to biological systems and included introductions to the relevant biology. Shorter lecture series and seminars presented latest developments and trends, e.g., gene regulation, genetic and biochemical networks, the physics of sensory systems, propulsion of Listeria and other biological motion, theoretical aspects of micro-fabricated devices. There was also time for personal work, discussions and working groups.
J. Howard: Mechanics of Motor Proteins
T. Duke: Modelling Motor Protein Systems
R. Bruinsma: Physics of Protein-DNA Interaction
M. Magnasco: A conjecture on how DNA topoisomerases disentangle DNA
E. Evans & P. Williams: Using Force to Probe Chemistry of Biomolecular Bonds and Structural Transitions
E. Sackmann: Micro-rheometry of Actin Networks and Cellular Scaffolds
R. Bruinsma & E. Sackmann: Statsitical Mechanics and Bioadhesion
M. Dogterom: Polymerisation Forces
J. Prost: The Physics of listeria Propulsion
R. H. Austin: Micro- and Nanotechnology-Physics in Biotechnology
E. Siggia: Bioinformatics and Statistical Mechanics
M. Magnasco: From features to Expression: methods for analysis of GeneChip® oligonucleotide hybridation arrays
W. Bialek: Thinking about the Brain
M. Magnasco: Song-induced Gene Expression in the Canary Brain
